Obsidian incorporated in 1997.  A year before, Jeff and Leigh were travelling the US and Mexico searching for unique stones and a silversmith workshop that could translate Jeff's vision into finished sterling and stone jewelry. In August 1996 while visiting the pyramids of the Sun and Moon in Teotihuacan, Mexico, they found a lapidary who sourced nearby and cut these gorgeous, amazing and colorful pieces of Rainbow Obsidian. They fell in love with a small multicolored Obsidian heart.  They were astounded at how many colors were in that one iconic piece of Rainbow Obsidian (pictured on the right).  This they decided would be the reason for the birthname of the company Obsidian. 

In addition to the prized and specially unique unusual pieces of jewelry collected by many worldwide, Obsidian also offers these same gems and fossils for purchase.  These stones all individually hand-chosen from lucrative sources by Jeff using his discerning eye for quality.  Another material also used in the jewelry and sold un-set is Fordite.  Fordite is a stunning layered paint enamel that looks like a real gem similar to a banded agate or crazy lace agate simulating the same layers of color and lines of separation.
